Wave, air-pulse or vibration: choosing the motion that suits you

Personal massagers are usually sorted by shape. Motion is the better place to start, because two pieces that look alike can feel entirely different, and the right motion for one person is the wrong one for another. There are three families.

Vibration

A motor spins a small weight and the whole body hums. This is the classic sensation, and the variables are frequency (how fast), amplitude (how deep) and where the motor sits. Two things shape how vibration feels:

  • A broad head spreads it. A wand such as Big Daddy or Velvet Sin has the motor in a large, flexible head, so the sensation is deep and diffuse and works as a muscle massager too. Big Daddy carries 50 combinations of mode and speed and sits at 7 of 7 on our intensity scale; Velvet Sin runs 25 modes at 6 of 7 with a hushed motor.
  • A small body focuses it. A bullet or miniature puts the same motion into a much smaller contact area, so it reads as precise rather than powerful. Little Angel (3 of 7) and Lily (2 of 7) are the gentle, pinpoint end of the range; Secret Angel (4 of 7) adds a wireless remote so the control can be handed to someone else.

Vibration suits people who know they like a direct, steady sensation, and it is the most versatile for use anywhere on the body.

Air-pulse

An air-pulse piece has no motor pressing against the body. A soft silicone seal rests over the skin and rhythmic changes in air pressure inside it create waves of suction and release. There is no buzz at all. People describe it as gentler on contact and more intense as it builds, and it does not need pressure or holding at an angle to work. Sweet Spot is our air-pulse piece: six modes, rated 5 of 7, with a soft contoured seal. It suits anyone who finds vibration too sharp, or who wants a completely different sensation from what they already own.

Wave motion

Wave motion is vibration delivered through a shape designed to move against the body rather than sit on it: a curve, a textured head, a rounded rather than pinpoint sensation. Luxe Wave is drawn as a single gentle S-curve with a ridged head, rated 4 of 7. Its middle modes spread sensation rather than concentrate it. It suits people who want fullness over focus, and who like a piece that follows the body's line.

Reading the intensity scale

Every device page carries an intensity level from 1 to 7. It describes the piece at its strongest setting relative to the rest of the collection, not the only way it can be used: every piece starts gently. A 2 is deliberately close and quiet; a 7 is built with strength as the starting point. If you are choosing a first piece, 3 to 5 is the range most people are happiest in.
